Fanfic: CHAPTER 3 – As Time Goes By (Louis Armstrong – OST Casablanca)  
 
Time passes really fast when you are having a good time, as the group of friends realizes. Lisa and Rick acting as couple, seated together, taking bites of each other food, Claudia expended most of her time holding little Dana, at the end of the dinner she offered to babysitter to let both couples enjoy the movie.  
 
– Not a word Miriya, little Dana will stay with auntie Claudia so her mummy and daddy can enjoy each other for a while  
 
– Are you sure Claudia – Max asks being followed by Miriya 
 
– Yes you know of the little warier can be  
 
– Not a problem, we will fun lots of fun. I will tell her everything about crazy uncle Roy 
 
– That’s incredible, is so good to have someone to tell our children about Roy, specially someone as you – says Rick without analyzing his words 
 
Suddenly there is silence and all of them turn to see Rick and Lisa, she has a really red cheeks and he a huge question mark in his face not understanding their reaction, it took him a few seconds to react just to complement  
 
– Well I mean all our children 
 
– We understood what you meant Hunter – answers Claudia with a funny tone in her voice, steering at Lisa 
 
They couldn’t ask for a better film, in the only cinema in Macross City there was a permanent festival of old films recovered from big studies, usually they lasted a week or two. In that occasion they were showing Casablanca… perhaps being watching one of the best pictures of XX Century or the tragic love story, but during all the film Rick holds Lisa hand, who can avoid cry at the end of the movie, same odd reacting that the tough Zentraedi warier seated next to them is experiencing.  
 
– I don’t understand why he let her go – asks a weepy Miriya while leaving the cinema  
 
– For her sake – answers a lovely Max, while wipes her tears  
 
– I know, but wouldn’t she be happier next to him 
 
– He knew that he wouldn’t be able to keep her safe, sometimes humans make sacrifices for those we love.  
 
Rick and Lisa remains in silence while pretend they follow the Stearlings talk, but both of them are stuck in their own thoughts. 
 
Rick thinks how the cinematographic Rick sacrificed his love for a greater good. He left Minmei go, so she can cheer the survivors with her voice as well as Humphrey Bogart left Ilsa go so she could continue inspiring Lazlo in his work for the resistance. But what is really breaking his head is not knowing if he truly loves Minmei and what he is willing to sacrifice for Lisa… “Life, if she asks it for” – but as always he is reluctant to admit it. 
 
Lisa perfectly knows what is on Rick’s mind, she knows him all to well. Knows that he also sacrifice his happiness with the love of his life for the good being of human race, what she cannot imagine is what Rick is willing to give away for her. But there’s something else that moves her even more than the fact of knowing there someone else in his mind – “We will always have Paris, I’ll always have Macross, even if at the end this fool chooses her, I’ll always have the memory of his, being next to him watching a movie, while holding hands or waking up in his arms after making love all night long” 
 
– Wow is really late, time really flies when you are having a great time, we have to do this again – is Max who returns them to reality  
 
– Ok, but next time I hope we can catch a happier film, I don’t want to cry again – Miriya comments  
 
– Hopefully they recover something by Mel Brooks – complements Rick – they are so funny  
 
– I love Young Frankenstein – follows Lisa – the part when they sing and dance “Putting in the Ritz” is hilarious  
 
– Did you really see that movie – ask both Max and Rick, without believing her  
 
– Of course I did, I like Mel Brooks and Monty Python… I adore chick flicks  
 
– Well you are so military all the time, that we guess you father read you the script from Patton or Bridge over Kwai River – Rick jokes about it 
 
– You’ll be surprise by how different is my personal life from the military ways, what are my taste for everything  
 
– We know you have very bad taste – is now Max turn to joke while sees Rick  
 
– Max we really must go – Miriya who really does not understand what they are talking about - Claudia should be despair by now with our baby  
 
Both couples say goodbye and boards their Jeeps.  
 
Lisa and Rick are really quite while he drives to her house, the wind in their faces, suddenly he starts to hum the song of the movie they have just seen…

– The song… is what Rick tells the pianist when he asked him to play the song Sam plays for Ilsa

Rick just observes her while waiting the change of light in their intersection, he is trying to understand how it is possible that Ice Queen Hayes, passionate Lisa that expends the night with him and the sweet girl next to him singing (not bad at all) a romantic old song, are in fact the same person 
 
And when two lovers woo  
They still say, "I love you."

Lisa is really singing for herself, well mostly – “we will always have Macross” – she is sure that he is remembering the mocking bird, but she wants to prove him that even in this there is not a huge difference between them.  
 
Moonlight and love songs

Jealousy and hate.  
Woman needs man

That no one can deny.  
 
“Yeah not matter what the future brings, I can rely in this, at least for now” – thinks Lisa while finishing the last verse of the old song that was the soundtrack of one of the most romantic stories ever – “yeah is here and now, tomorrow I’ll deal whatever the fuck happens” 
 
It's still the same old story  
A fight for love and glory  
A case of do or die.  
The world will always welcome lovers  
As time goes by. 
 
– We’re home – announces Rick, even he has been parked in front of Lisa’s house for a while now, but he didn’t want to interrupt her, he really enjoys the little and improvise serenade.  
 
– Do you want to stay

He stops and take her hands on his, kissing very gently each wrist, she is just enjoying not believing that in fact Rick Hunter is kissing her and looking at her with such adoration –“here’s looking at you kid” – thinks while approaches to kiss him in the lips, that his sign, he takes her in her arms to the bedroom, where they end up making love all night.  
 
Still the same old story, the fight for love and glory, a case of do or die. The world will always welcome loves, while time goes by.  
 
And even both are afraid to confess it, the best way to be while time goes by is being together sharing their lives.
