Chapter 7
“Dream a little dream of me”
When Lisa arrived home, she threw off her coat and her purse as soon as she crossed the threshold of the entrance. She took a few steps and kicked her shoes off, her feet were killing her. And after two long days working on the installation of the new Reflex engines for the SDF-2 the only thing she wanted to do was to change into some comfortable clothes, eat something and maybe, just maybe, read some of the reports before going to her meeting with Maistroff tomorrow. She couldn't help frowning.
“Guess you have been too lucky for too long,” Lisa said to herself while she kicked herself out of the couch. After all it was the third time the meeting with Maistroff had been rescheduled since they had left the Satellite.
She changed into a comfortable jogging outfit, called her favorite Italian restaurant to order dinner and let herself fall onto the couch again to watch some tv while she waited. It was good to be home again after all. When the door bell sounded she got up from the couch reluctantly.
“Coming,” she yelled as she approached the door while searching for money in her purse. She was still doing that when she opened the door.
“Your order ma'am.”
“Thanks, here's the... Rick!” Lisa said surprised when she finally looked up and found Rick standing at her front door with her food.
“Hey there,” Rick said with a smile.
“Hi,” Lisa answered confused.
“Can I come in?” Rick asked still standing at the front door.
“Yes, I'm sorry...” Lisa said turning slightly red and moving aside so Rick could come in. “Come in, I'll pay the delivery guy and I'll join you.”
“Don't worry I already paid,” Rick said raising the bag that he had in his hands.
“Thanks,” Lisa said and smiled to him which made him smile back.
“Should I leave this in the kitchen?”
“Please,” Lisa said and Rick started to walk towards the kitchen. She remained a few steps behind so she could look at herself in the mirror she had in the corridor that led to the kitchen. She tried to fix her hair and cursed her decision of wearing a jogging outfit and the circles under her eyes.
“Did you eat?” Lisa asked when she arrived in the kitchen.
“No, I came here right after my shift was over. I was worried about you, since you haven't returned my calls.”
“I know, I'm so sorry,” Lisa said honestly. “I wanted to call you today, but things have been really chaotic with the installation of the new reflex engines and the test flights. I barely slept 4 hours last night.”
“Sorry to hear that,” Rick said.
“It's okay, it will be over soon,” she said with a smile while she opened the bag with the food. “So, do you want to share dinner with me?”
“Sure, besides it smells so great!”
“I know!” Lisa said happily.
They ate dinner seated in Lisa's small kitchen, listening to music but mostly talking about what they had done while they were apart, about the future ops and then about trivial things. Once they finished they picked up the dishes and Lisa started to washe them while Rick dried them.
Lisa handed Rick the last plate so he could dry it and moved next to him to put the dry crockery in the shelves. They had done this several times before, either in her house or in Rick's, but tonight somehow there was something different.
“I missed you,” Rick said standing behind Lisa. Lisa turned in his direction and looked at him in the eyes and held her breath.
“I missed you too,” Lisa admitted shyly.
“It was so weird not to have you here, not to see your face on the comm screen.”
“It couldn't be that bad. At least you didn't have to hear me or argue with me,” Lisa said nervously.
“It was,” Rick simply said and moved even closer to her. “I really missed you,” he whispered only inches away from her lips.
“Really?” she asked holding his gaze, feeling her heart beat faster and faster in her chest.
“I think I realized how important you are to me,” Rick said while tenderly moving a lock of her hair away from her face.
“Am I?” Lisa asked with fear.
“You are the most important person to me right now Lisa,” he said honestly. And that was all that it took for Lisa to close the distance between them and she softly kissed him.
Even though Rick was eager to kiss her, it took him by surprise that it was her who took the first step. She pulled back after a few seconds, unsure if what she had done was the right thing to do, but she only managed to move a few inches away when Rick grabbed her from behind the neck and kissed her deeply.
The kiss was like a trigger that let loose the desire they felt for each other. Their hands started to move across the other’s body unbuttoning jackets and pulling off t-shirts in a tender and known choreography while their legs took them to Lisa's bedroom.
While Rick softly and tenderly led her over the bed, Lisa couldn't help biting her lower lip. Was this the signal she had been waiting? Was this a sign that things had finally changed between them?
“You are so beautiful,” he whispered softly against her lips, Lisa got lost in his baby blue eyes and tangled her hands in his unruly hair. They kissed again and while they kissed Lisa's hands started to move across Rick's toned and firm naked back.
He moved his hungry mouth away from her mouth and started to devour her neck, making her arch her back and moan his name. When he returned to her mouth he knew they had reach the point where either they crossed the line or stopped things immediately. One more time he pulled away some locks of her hair from her face so he could see her straight into her eyes, she did the same and kept one of her hands resting tenderly on one of his cheeks. It was as if they were talking without words, she understood his question and he her answer, but just to make it more clear she pulled him towards her and kissed him passionately, and then rolled and placed herself on top of him. He smiled to her, to the fact she always wanted to be in control and kissed her again.
Rick woke up in the middle of the night, Lisa's soft breathing letting him know that she was sound asleep. He moved his arm slowly away from her as to not wake her up. When his arm was free he rested his weight on his elbow and looked at Lisa. Why it was always the same thing? He was so sure about what he felt for her before they fell into bed but the moment he woke up everything was so confused and scary. He knew he had strong feelings for her, feelings that were beyond friendship, but was he truly in love with her? Or had he tried to fool himself by saying that he felt something for her so he would not feel so bad for sleeping with her? Because, he did care for her and he hated to think of her as a sex friend.
“What are you doing Rick?” he asked himself and took a deep breath. Finally with the same care he had put in removing his arm from Lisa, he left the bed and started to look for his clothes.
When he was finally dressed, he walked close to Lisa's side of the bed, carefully bent down and kissed her on the forehead. Lisa moved to the other side and cuddle again but didn't wake up.
Rick looked at her tenderly for a moment and then started to walk away, feeling his heart heavy with regret.
When Lisa woke up, she wasn't surprised by the fact that Rick wasn't at her side. He never stayed the night, which was the most logical thing to do because it would be very inappropriate if they both leaft her house together in the morning. The rumor mill was already talking about the fact that they slept together and for sure it didn't need any kind of confirmation. But still, she secretly wished he would have stayed the night; it would be nice to wake up cuddled next to him.
She sight and cuddled against the pillows that still had his scent on it and she giggled. Maybe this was it. Maybe things were finally changing between them. Maybe they would finally be together. Her heart beat faster, but this time it wasn't because she was scared, it was because she thought he loved her back. It was the first time that she felt it wasn't a just possibility but instead it felt real.
The only doubt that was running through her head was why hadn't she said how she felt? Why she didn't tell him that she loved him? She thought for a moment, but then the answer came to her: because she didn't need to. She had shown him that she loved him; after all she had made love with him. And when they had looked into each other’s eyes they didn't need words.
“Enough Hayes, now get your lazy ass out of bed,” she yelled to herself and jumped out of bed. Nothing was going ruin her day, not even the meeting with Maistroff, she thought while she walked towards the shower whistling “To Be in Love”.
“Good God! It must be snowing in hell today!” she almost yelled in shock when she realized what song she was whistling.
Roy was walking listlessly. He felt he had his flight suit glued to his body because of the latest test flight he had flown during the day. He was sweaty, hungry and tired but most of all he was annoyed: it was the third hard landing in a row. The third! That was fine for a rookie but not for him, and it wasn't just a bad day it had almost been a bad week. Ever since they got back to Earth he had been having trouble landing the new VTs and to make things even worse he now had a meeting with Maistroff. And damn his flight suit that was itching in all the wrong places.
Before opening the door of Maistroff's office he thought about counting backwards to calm his temper, but he knew perfectly well that it wasn't going to be enough. It was bad enough that he was angry with himself for his flying but hearing Maistroff talk about it, just the thought of it made his blood boil. Finally he took a deep breath and opened the door.
“You finally decided to join us Captain,” said Maistroff even before Roy entered completely to his office. Roy just looked at him and stood at attention next to Lisa, who was already in the room.
“I was hopping you could enlighten me. I have a report here signed by the two of you that says that the test flights are going fine when the truth is that we already lost one of the new VTs and two more are in maintenance.”
“Sir, like I said before...” Lisa was saying but Maistroff cut her off.
“I want to hear Captain Fokker's opinion,” he said making Lisa clench her jaw.
“Captain Hayes is right, considering everything the tests are going fine. The problem that cost the lost of the first VT was fixed and we haven't experienced more problems.”
“And you don’t consider the fact that two of the VTs are in maintenance because you crash landed them a problem?” Maistroff said sarcastically.
“Sir, there was a small malfunction with the navigational systems that caused the problems during landing but Doctor Lang is already...” Lisa was saying but Maistroff cut her off again.
“I have doctor Lang’s report here, Captain,” Maistroff said and threw a report “onto” this desk. “So stop giving me excuses for Captain Fokker, Hayes.”
“I don't need to make excuses for Captain Fokker, sir,” Lisa said annoyed and took a step closer to Maistroff's desk. “He is the best test pilot we have, if it weren't for him we would have lost those two VTs too.”
“Then that means the reason that these test flights keep failing is you,” Maistroff said and looked her in the eyes. “Because after all you are the one responsible for this entire operation.”
“Yes sir, I am,” Lisa said gritting her teeth.
“The Captain has done nothing but an outstanding job,” Roy defended her.
“Really? She has? Because we already lost one VT, which costs the same as a small hospital. So really Captain you think she has done an outstanding job?”
“I don’t have a single doubt about it. And if it weren't for her I would not be here,” Roy said dryly.
“Touching, really. But let's not mix things here,” Maistroff said with contempt.
“I'm not mixing things. Captain Hayes’ expertise prevented the first test flight from becoming a complete disaster. Fortunately we only lost the VT.”
“And that's not a disaster?”
“At least no one ended up dead,” Roy answered.
“Oh that's a great comfort. So let's just keep destroying VTs.”
“I thought a human life is more important than a machine nowadays,” Lisa said sharply, Maistroff just looked at her coldly.
“That's not an excuse, you should have done everything that was in your power to save that machine.”
“And that's what she did, but the failure was so massive that there was nothing she could do from the satellite.”
“Then maybe the problem was you. Because aren't you the most experienced test pilot we have?”
“It was a complete system failure! There was nothing Captain Fokker could have done,” Lisa said hardly.
“We will never know that, will we? Because we couldn't recover a single piece of the VT. So there's no way we could know if the constant failures in this operation are due to your inability to lead this operation or your inability to properly chose the people under your command. For the first flight you put an inexperienced flight operator, Lieutenant Porter, in charge and she froze at the first sign of trouble. Worse than that is the fact that you chose as your test pilot a pilot a man who you yourself had grounded for showing up for combat in “unfit condition”- your words, Captain Hayes, but we all know that he was drunk during combat,” Maistroff said ironically. Roy was almost ready to jump over his throat but Lisa moved first
“Captain Fokker is by far the most respon...” Lisa was saying angrily when Maistroff cut her off.
“Enough with the excuses! The truth is you put an inexperienced officer in charge of the first flight, you chose a drunk pilot to fly them, who I'm not surprised had shown up drunk to the flight. And you, well we all know you are an overrated officer,” Maistroff's last words fanned Roy's fury back to full flame.
“Of all people you should be the last person to even dare judge us, because at least we know what it is to be out there. Lieutenant Porter was the one who lead the pilots of the SDF-1 during the rain of fire in case you have forgotten and Captain Hayes, I don't even have to defend her. And me, I've been a test pilot long before you sat comfortably behind a desk and decided to play soldier!”
“How dare you!” Maistroff hissed punching his desk with fist.
“If there's an overrated officer in this room it's not me and it sure as hell isn’t Captain Hayes.”
“You...” Maistroff began to say, his face red in anger. “How dare you to talk to a superior like that! You will pay for this reckless behavior.”
“What are you going to do? Hit me with a report?” Roy said sarcastically with a grin.
“Captain!” Lisa said standing in front of Roy. She looked at him with wide open eyes as if she was yelling to him to shut up or she would kill him with her own hands.
“Get out of my office, both of you. Now!” Maistroff yelled at them. “This will not be swept under the rug like everyone does with the two of you. Now get out!”
“Yes sir,” Lisa said and saluted him. Roy just look at him defiantly until finally Lisa grabbed him by the arm and pulled him out of the office.
“What the hell were you thinking?” Lisa said once they were far enough away. “Did you smash your head against the control panel of your VT or are you just completely insane?” Lisa said crossing her arms over her chest scolding him.
“What else did you expect me to do? Did you hear what he said about you, about Sammie?”
“Yes I did, and believe me all I wanted to do was to pull his head off in the most painful way but he is still our superior officer.”
“He's nothing more than superior asshole!” Roy said with annoyance and Lisa barely held in a laugh.
“He is a jerk and we all know it, but all you did in there was give him ammo to attack us.”
“I know... it’s just that he has this way of making me lose my temper and all I want is to...” Roy didn't finish the sentence, instead he mimicked with his hand as if he was strangling Maistroff.
“I know... I know,” Lisa said and paced around him trying to clear her head.
“I should have kept my mouth shut,” Roy said after a moment and gave a huge sigh.
“Do you pilots ever keep your mouth shut?” Lisa said more to herself than to Roy and sighed.
“I'm sorry,” Roy said looking at the ground. “I know this is important to you.”
“It's not just about me Roy.”
“Then what are we going to do?”
“I'm not sure. Talk to the admiral to make some damage control?”
“That's probably the best thing to do, but he won't be happy.”
“Not even a little bit,” Lisa said and sighed again as if trying to gather her strength to go and talk to the admiral. “I'll go talk to him, he must be about to return to base from the meeting in Monument City.”
“I'll talk to him. I made this mess and I'll fix it.”
“Are you sure?” Lisa asked concerned and even a little bit scared.
“I am, trust me,” Roy said confidently, Lisa just looked at him hesitantly.
“Okay,” was all that she said, unsure of her own words.
“Don't look at me like that,” Roy protested.
“Like what?”
“Like you think I will create a bigger mess than the current one.”
“I...” Lisa was saying but Roy interrupted her.
“I won't mess it up. I promise,” Roy said with a confident smile. “Now, if you'll excuse me I need to get out of this flight suit. Although at this point I might just stop by sickbay and ask them to cut if off,” Roy said and Lisa looked at him with concern and amusement.
“How long have you been in it?” she finally asked.
“Enough to not know where my skin ends and the suit begins.”
“Ouch.”
“Yup ouch is the best way to describe it, so if you don't mind.”
“Of course,” Lisa said and stepped out of Roy's path.
“I'll let you know how things went with the admiral,” said Roy without much enthusiasm.
“The moment you get out of his office you call me,” Lisa said seriously.
“I promise,” Roy said and finally started to walk away.
Lisa was moving her stiff neck from one side to other, trying to ease the tension when someone knocked on her door.
“I'm not here,” Lisa said too harshly for her own taste, but if one more person came to that door with another report she was sure she would lose it.
“Not even for a cup of mochaccino?” Roy said from the door shaking a cup of coffee and smiling.
“Well if you put it that way,” Lisa said and smiled at him.
“Good, because I come bearing gifts,” Roy said and placed in front of Lisa the cup he was carrying in his hand and a small box. “Your mochaccino and some muffins.”
“Should I start to get worried?” Lisa said while she grabbed her cup. “Because this is either a celebration or you are trying to buy me off with coffee and chocolate so I won't be mad at you because things went bad with the admiral.”
“Well about that...” Roy said and started to look at his own cup.
“What?” Lisa asked nervously. “What did you say to him?” she asked with concern.
“Well...” he started and fell silent again.
“Roy!” Lisa demanded.
“It went fine,” he said smiling. “We're still on the mission, but he wasn't happy and the incident will be on our permanent record. And I'll have some deductions from my pay but it’s all good.”
Lisa just let herself fall into her chair again.
“God, woman you need to ease up a little,” Roy said smiling. “Maybe you shouldn't drink all that coffee and drink my tea instead,” Roy said and started to move to grab Lisa's cup but she slapped him on the hand.
“Don't even think about it Fokker!” she said and grabbed the coffee in her hands protectively. “Never, and I mean it, Never mess with my coffee.”
“Okay,” Roy said and rolled his eyes.
“Good,” Lisa said with a triumphant smile and took a sip from her coffee.
“The admiral also said that we should recheck everything we have done so far, to see if there has been some mistake that we overlooked or something that could be improved, and that we should also have a meeting with Doctor Lang. That way if Maistroff decides to attack us again we'll know how to attack back.”
“I was thinking the same thing, in fact I was checking the reports from the test flights and asked Doctor Lang to send me all the reports they have of the VTs and the tests flights.”
“Good.””Doctor”
“That pile over there is the reports of the flights and the one here is the one from Doctor Lang,” Lisa said while pointing at two huge piles of files.
“Wow! Those are a lot of files,” Roy said frowning.
“Tell me about it,” Lisa said shrugging her shoulders.
“So, where do we start?” Roy asked.
“Don't worry about it. I'll check the files; you should go home and rest for tomorrow’s flights.”
“Hey we're a team okay. We are in this together,” Roy said and got up from his seat and picked up a pile of doctor Lang’s reports. “I'll check this and you check those.”
“Roy you really don't have to...” Lisa was saying but Roy gave her an annoyed look. “Fine, I'll check this pile,” Lisa said with resignation and a smile.
“Good,” Roy said with a smile and sat again. He grabbed one report and started to read it in silence while drinking his green tea while Lisa did the same at the other end of the desk. He did want to help Lisa with this, after all they were in this mission together and he would not let her do all the work. Especially not when the current situation they were into had been his fault. But he was also looking for any excuse to not go back home; he hated going home, the place was a mess, it smelled and it was so cold, but worse than that was the fact that he felt so incredibly lonely in there that he preferred being anywhere doing anything rather than being at his home.
After reading 5 reports, Roy moved in his chair searching for a more comfortable position and finally he put his feet on Lisa's desk. And started to read another report.
Lisa looked at him, unable to not raise an eyebrow. “Roy...”
“What?” he said barely raising his eyes from the report.
“Nothing, never mind,” she finally said shaking her head and smiling.
“Are you okay?” Roy once he finished reading what he was reading.
“Me? Yes, why?”
“I don't know, you've been weird all day,” Roy said and shrugged his shoulders.
“Weird?”
“Yes, I don't know... you've been like that all day,” he said and when Lisa raised an eyebrow as a sign that she didn't understand what he was saying he continued, “for example, when we were with Maistroff. Normally your eyes would have been throwing sharp knifes at him or at least fire, but you were... I don't know they where kinda dreamy.”
“Dreamy?”
“Not exactly dreamy, more like kinda glowing.”
“Oh come on!” Lisa said trying her best to sound serious.
“Really, I don't remember seeing you like this. At least not since... well a long time,” Roy said and looked at her in the eyes suspiciously.
“Roy I don't know what the hell you’re talking about. But I for sure wasn't glowing, I'm not a neon sign you know. What I am is tired, so can we please get back to reading all these files?”
“Are you hiding something from me Lisa?”
“I have nothing to hide, now could you please get back to reading those files.” Lisa said nervously. “And could you please take your feet off my desk.”
“Fine,” Roy said looking at her suspiciously. Finally he took his feet off her desk, and began reading again.
Lisa grabbed another report and started reading too, but couldn't help smiling inwardly at Roy's comment. Because after all it was true, she felt like she was glowing ever since she had woke up. She was happy today, like she hadn't felt in a long, long time.
