Author’s note: This is a Roy and Lisa fanfic, you are warned. If you don’t want to read this please don’t. I wrote this because I have always think that Roy is an awesome character and that he and Lisa will make a wonderful couple if it weren't for Claudia. And because Lisa deserves someone a little less confuse than Rick. In order for this fic to work Roy never died in the episode “Farwell Big Brother”

Chapter3
“Drifting”

Roy opened up his eyes, his head spinning a little, but he knew exactly how to get rid of the spinning and the headache.
He reached for the bottle of beer on the coffee table next to the bed, but an arm restricted his movements. Roy turned his head to look at the owner of the arm, a blond woman who was sound sleep next to him.
“Wasn't she a redhead?” He asked to himself, “Or was the redhead from night before?” He asked to himself and then grinned. “Maybe you got lucky last night and there is a redhead woman under the sheets too.”
He sat up to look better at the other side of the bed, but he only saw the blond woman. “Not so lucky, I guess Fokker,” he said shrugging his shoulders. Finally he got up.
“What time is it?” Asked the sleepy voice of the woman.
“Time for you to leave,” Roy said while he walked towards the bathroom.
“But dawn hasn't even broke yet.”
“Well darling that's how a soldier’s life is,” he said barely turning to look at her and winked.
“Will I see you again?”
“Maybe... maybe not,” he answered and turned his back to her again.
“I'll leave you my number.”
“Sure, leave it on the table among the others,” He said, pointing at the table without looking at her. Then he entered into the bathroom.
The girl looked at him infuriated, pick up all her things and left his place slamming the door on her way out.

It was the first day that the Admiral let her work a full shift, finally! She understood that he cared for her, but to her it was far worse to stay at home doing nothing than burying herself in work.
She was entering the Control Room when she heard a group of young officers talking, unaware that she had just entered the room.
“I swear to you it's true, Barbara was making out with Captain Fokker at “The Hangar” the other day,” said one of the girls.
“No way! It can't be, because I saw him quite entertained, if you know what I mean, a couple of nights ago with one of the girl from the maintenance crew,” said another girl.
“Well, it's public knowledge that he was quite a playboy before dating Commander Grant,” said the third.
“And rumor says that he is as good under the sheets as he is in the skies.”
“Oh yeah, I heard the same thing. And that's a theory I would like to confirm on my own,” said one and the others start to giggle.
“So do I, so do I. And at this point all we have to do is go to “The Hangar” every night and we might get lucky!”
That was it! Lisa could not believe what she had heard. She intentionally dropped the folders she was carrying onto her station. The three girls jumped and turned into her direction, the moment they saw Lisa they went pale.
“Captain Hayes,” said one practically stuttering.
“Lieutenant,” Lisa said sharply and just sat.
“We..we're,” said another of the girls.
“I want a report of what has happened during this shift ASAP,” Lisa said without even looking at the girls. She remained at her station, hearing the girls run from one side of the Control Room to the other until one of them shakilyhanded her the report.
“Here's the report Ma'am,” she said, her fear audible in her voice.
“Leave it over there,” said Lisa pointing a pile of reports at her side with her hand without looking at the girl. The girl left the report on the pile, still shaking and ran back to her own station.
Lisa was being deliberately hard, enjoying the fear she inflicted on them. Because to be honest she wanted to rip off the heads of those girls. How could they say that Roy had being making out with two different women when it hadn't even been a month since Claudia had died. They probably had misunderstood the situation. Roy had always been a ladies man, he always walked around flirting with every woman that crossed his path, but that didn't mean that he would have something with all those women. That was who he was, he had even flirted with her on more than one occasion but nothing had ever happened between them.
Probably these girls had the hots for Roy and now that he was on the market again, they thought that they might have a chance with him. After all, girls always flew around Roy like a swarm of mosquitoes, but that didn't mean he'd pay attention to them. He still was Claudia's flyboy and she knew they loved each other. Plus Roy was old school, he will not stamp on like that over Claudia's memory.

She grabbed the report, and felt the girls gasped, slowly she passed the pages and then raised her right eyebrow, leaving the report aside. She felt the girls fear.
“You're dismissed, the next shift is about to arrive,” Lisa finally said.
“Yes, Ma'am,” the girls said in unison, just as the doors of the Control Room opened and the trio appeared behind them.
“Lieutenants Porter, Young and Leeds reporting for duty Ma'am,” Said Vanessa, while the three of them saluted at Lisa.
Lisa just nodded in acknowledgement. The girls that where in the control room saluted at Lisa as well and walked as fast as they could, still scared, out of the Control room, almost running over the trio. Kim just gave them an annoyed look.
“What's up with them?” Vanessa asked when they were gone.
“I bet Lisa scared them,” Kim said.
“They deserved it,” Lisa said frowning.
“It's so good to have you back Lisa,” Sammie said happily.
“It's good to be back,” Lisa said with a soft smile that the girls answered back. After that they went to their stations.

Roy was flying his VT bored. He always hated patrolling, it was so monotonous, so emotionless. What he needed now was combat. He was desperate to fly a combat mission, to feel the adrenaline in his veins, the excitement of a good dog fight, the G forces oppressing his body, making him feel alive. Nothing made him feel more alive than recklessly flying his plane searching for his target, kill or be killed. It was pure survival instincts.
And yet here he was, flying over a desolate beach that must have been beautiful, with white sand, emerald water and soft waves. And now it was devastated, filled with war junk and death was ever so present. More than that it was filled with the side effects of death, the desolation that death left behind it's path. He made a hammer head* with his VT just to stop thinking about it. Maybe the blood running fast to his head would wipe out his thoughts, but it didn't work. Nothing seemed to work lately or at least not how it used to work years ago.
He made a barrel roll*. He tried to remember past days, his days in Pop's Hunter flying circus, making these same moves in his old Fokker. Those were happy days, he had nothing to worry about other than making a perfect loop. And then everything changed, the war began and he traded his old Fokker for a combat airplane, and instead of worrying about making a perfect a loop he had to worry about the men under his command, about keeping them alive; he didn't succeed on that all the time. And then he met her...
He made a Lomcevak*. He had happy moments with her too. But did those happy moments compensate the pain he was feeling now? He thought.
Damn! He was thinking again, and that was what he was trying to avoid. He needed a drink, and more important than that he needed his shift to be over. He hated patrolling, being in the cockpit with nothing more to do than watch the clouds, which was an invitation to think, to remember. All he wanted now was to go to “The Hangar” and drink, pick up a nameless girl and forget. After all today was Veteran's day, he needed to celebrate...

Lisa was sitting next to Kim, looking at her glass of white wine not sure if she should drink it or not. She didn't feel comfortable being in “The Hangar,” wspecially now. It wasn't like she had too much to celebrate either. But the Trio had been so adamant that she should go out, that it was Veteran's day and that she should join them for at least a glass of wine, so here she was.
“Hi girls!” Roy said, a bottle of beer in his right hand. “It's always a pleasure to see you.”
“Captain Fokker,” Kim said coldly.
“Vanessa, did you change your glasses? Your eyes look far more beautiful tonight,” Roy said, bending closer to Vanessa making her blush.
“No, Sir. I haven't,” Vanessa finally answered uncomfortably.
“Then how is it possible I haven't noticed before how gorgeous your eyes are?” Roy said with a mischievous smile.
“Roy we better go,” Rick said grabbing Roy by the arm, pushing him away from the girl's table and giving them an apologetic look.
“Leave? Why? The night is still young and it's Veteran's day,” Roy said a little annoyed, pulling his arm away from Rick's. Lisa looked at him judgmentally, raising her right eyebrow a little bit. Roy looked at her defiantly.
“I said, cheers for all the Veterans!” Roy yelled holding his beer bottle high.
“Cheers to the Veterans!” the crowd answered. And Roy drank the contents of his bottle in one long gulp.
“Hey waiter!” Roy said and then whistled. “Bring me another beer.”
“Roy I think you have had enough to drink,” Rick sai and put his hand on Roy's shoulder. Roy turned his head enough to look at Rick out of the corner of his eye.
“What could you possibly know about anything, rookie,” Roy said cuttingly, moving his shoulder away from Rick's hand. Then he started to stagger towards the small stage that was in the middle of the bar.
“I know that song man!” Roy yelled cheerfully and climbed onto the stage with a group of pilots and started to sing the song.
Rick shook his head and gave a small smile to the girls, and then went after Roy.

Lisa looked at Roy, signing his lungs out on the stage, a bottle of beer in his hand and having the time of his life as if nothing had happened. She couldn't help frowning.
“I've never saw Captain Fokker acting like that,” Vanessa said.
“Maybe that's his way of dealing with grief,” Sammie said shrugging her shoulders.
“He has a very peculiar way of dealing with it,” Kim said while she looked at Roy who was flirting with the waitress that was handing him another bottle of beer.
“That's not grieving, that's making a scene,” Lisa said hardly while looking at him grabbing the waitress to dance with her.
“He's a man, they deal with it differently,” Vanessa said while adjusting her glasses.
“Oh don't give that pathetic excuse V!” Kim said a little annoyed.
“I was just saying,” Vanessa said a little ashamed.

They remained in silence for a while, looking at the stage. Rick climbed onto the stage to try to pull Roy off of it, but he refused. Finally he grabbed he microphone and made everyone else shut up.
“Silence, silence people,” Roy said and when everyone was quiet he continued. “I want to make a toast, for my little brother, here, Rick,” he said pointing at Rick. “And to the love of his life, the always charming Miss Lynn-Minmei,” He said and made a pause to look at Rick viciously. “Whose life is far more important than anyone else’s.”
Rick looked at Roy and went pale. The air inside the bar could be cut with a knife because of the tension.
“So cheers to Miss Macross,” Roy said sarcastically, raising his bottle of beer in front of Rick.
“That's not tr...” Rick was saying but Roy abruptly interrupted him.
“Don't you dare!” Roy said angrily.
“If I had known how serious the situation was I ...” Rick was saying and Roy grabbed him by collar of his jacket, raising him from the floor.
“You knew!” He said furiously. “You knew how bad the situation was and you choose her, your little Miss Macross!” Roy said while some officers tried to separate him from Rick.
“I never..”
“No, you never mean to do things, but you do them anyway!” Roy said and pushed him away, making Rick almost fall down the stage. Only the piano stopped him. “So tell me Rick, where's your Miss Macross now because I can't see her? Did she thank you for saving her life by running into Kyle's arms?” Roy added venomously.

Rick stood there, holding onto the piano. Roy's words had caught him off guard, and had hurt him deeply. Finally he found out why Roy had been so distant with him. Roy blamed him for Claudia's death and there wasn't much that he could say in his favor. He had never expected the situation to be that bad; he never thought that their plane would be so seriously hit and that it would crash. If he could turn back time, he would have sent one of his men to help them, but at that moment he really thought he needed all his men with him.
“Don't lose your perspective,” Lisa's words sounded in his head; she had said them to him when she assigned him the mission. Had he lost his perspective then? And did the price to pay end up being Claudia's life?.
Rick refused to believe that. He searched into the middle of the crowd for Lisa’s eyes. She always seamed to pull him out of his darkest hours, but her eyes this time were full of doubts, like maybe that was what she thought too. Maybe that was the reason of her own distancing herself from him.

Roy coldly looked at Rick one more time and then stepped off the stage. He grabbed a bottle from one of tables and started walking towards the exit, passing next to Lisa.

She just looked at him. Roy had said what she had wanted to say to Rick since the moment she found out Claudia had died, but she hadn't. Maybe because she still felt something for him, maybe because she always forgave him and yet it didn't matter how hard she tried to rationalize what happened that day. She couldn't help feeling a grudge starting to form in her heart, because Minmei would always be first in his heart.

She kept looking at the door, even when Roy had disappeared behind it. Somehow she felt she should do something, say something, but she didn't know what. Claudia had made her promise to take care of Roy, but what could she do? She wasn't his babysitter and certainly there wasn't too much of a chance that he would listen to her. Plus there was the chance that what Vanessa had said was right, maybe this was his way of dealing with loss. Maybe he needed some time on his own to figure out how to move on with his life. Perhaps partying and drinking was to him what work and what withdrawnness was for her, a way to escape and hide from others what he was truly feeling.
Either way she didn't feel like staying in there anymore. She wanted to go home, she had a small mountain of reports to read so quietly leave the bar.
