Author’s note: This is a Roy and Lisa fanfic, you are warned. If you don’t want to read this please don’t. I wrote this because I have always think that Roy is an awesome character and that he and Lisa will make a wonderful couple if it weren't for Claudia. And because Lisa deserves someone a little less confuse than Rick.

Maelström 
Chapter one 
“The darkness closes upon us” 
Lisa was sitting in the officer's lounge looking at her lunch and playing with her fork. She knew she should eat something because her 8 hours shift started in half an hour, but she had lost her appetite. He had run after Minmei again and she had been the one who had to listen him complain about the fact that she had run away from him one more time. When was this vicious circle going to break? She asked to herself. 
“What did Hunted do his time?” The voice of Claudia took Lisa out of her thoughts. 
“What? Why?” Lisa asked surprised while Claudia placed her own tray in front of her. “Why do you say that?” 
“Simple honey, because the soup in front of you is as cold as the Arctic and you haven't touched your food at all, not to mention the expression in your face,” Claudia said with a grin. 
“When did I become so predictable?” Lisa complained, resting her weight against the back of her chair. 
“Sweetie it's not your fault,” she said winking at her. “So what did he do this time?” 
“The same thing he always does, run after Minmei and then whine to me about the fact that she keeps running away from him,” Lisa said and couldn't help letting loose a sigh. 
“When is he going to get tired of playing the same act over and over again?” Claudia asked more to herself than to Lisa. Lisa just shrugged her shoulders and finally took a bite of her, by now cold, dish of pasta. 
“Everything was so fine, but every time he sees her all that I have built just goes to hell.” 
Claudia only gave an annoyance sound and grabbed another bite of her own lunch. 
“I like Rick, he is a good guy but boy he can be obtuse some times. I really don't know how he can still keep chasing the pop star when he has you in front of his eyes.” 
“I guess I'm not what he wants,” Lisa said with regret. 
“Oh don't give me that crap!” Claudia said frowning. “You are far much than what he could ever want, the problem is that he doesn't know what he wants. he is just a kid after all.” 
“He's not a kid,” Lisa defended him. 
“Yes he is and you know it!” Claudia stated. “And Lisa you don't need a kid to babysit, you babysit pilots all day. What you need is man.” 
“There's the girl I've been looking for!” The loud voice of Roy hit them from the entrance of the lounge. Claudia just rolled her eyes as if she was annoyed but couldn't help smiling. 
“Hey gorgeous,” Roy he said as gave her a flirting wink, then grabbed a French fry from her plate and ate it before sitting next to her. “Hi Lisa,” he said flirtatiously. Lisa just nodded at his salute. 
“Hi flyboy” Claudia teased him, he was about to grab another fry from her plate but she slapped him on the hand. “Take your right hand away from my plate,” she said and raised an eyebrow; “and your left from my leg.” 
“Unbelievable, I can't eat from my girl's plate or touch her!” Roy complained crossing his arms as if he was hurt. 
“As I was telling you Lisa, you need a man,” Claudia said ignoring him. 
“Psst the entire base knows that,” Roy said and Lisa gave him a killer look and Claudia elbowed him in the ribs. “Ouch! But it's the true,” Roy said innocently. 
“Where's your tact?” Claudia asked him and then just shook her head and turned to Lisa again. “But seriously honey what you need is someone at your level. Someone who chases you, not someone that you have to chase.” 
“That's true” Roy said pointing at Lisa with a French fry that he had managed to steal from Claudia's plate. “You need someone not only able to steal your heart but also someone who is ready to fight for it at all cost.” 
“I couldn't have said it better,” Claudia said with a proud smile. “See that's why I love you,” she added and kissed Roy on the cheek. 
“I'm not just hot looks, babe” He said proudly. 
“See this is the kind of man you need Lisa, a little air headed sometimes, but a man who knows what he wants and is not afraid to go after it. Someone who will always put you in first place, always” she said with a smile looking at Roy with pure love. Lisa just looked at them unable to not to feel envy. 
“Air headed?” Roy protested teasingly, looking back at Claudia with the same loving expression she had. 
“That was a nice way of putting it,” she joked.  
“And let's not forget a God in bed, but I doubt you'll find someone as good as me,” He said and both woman just rolled. 
“You were going so good Fokker, and then you just had to add that” Lisa said teasingly. 
“That's because you haven't have the pleasure of spending a night with me,” He said bending towards her seductively. 
“Hell will freeze first, Fokker,” Lisa said coldly crossing her arms over her chest. 
“Oh but I can make the ice melt,” he said moving even closer, making Lisa blush, then he just winked at her as if he had won a battle and returned to his seat. 
“Too bad for you that I'm off the market.” He said and grabbed another of Claudia's fries, fast enough to avoid being slapped in the hand again. 
“Yeah, you just broke my heart with that,” Lisa said sarcastically. 
“I can lend him to you sometimes, if you want,” Claudia said teasingly. 
“You'll loan me out?” Roy asked placing his hands over his heart as if he was hurt by her words. 
“Only to Lisa and no one else.” 
“As much as I appreciate the offer I'll have to pass,” Lisa said and started to get on her feet. 
“You can't let an offer like that pass,” Roy said, incredulous. Lisa just shook her head. 
“My shift is about to start, see you on the bridge Claudia” She said and grabbed her tray. “See you later Fokker,” she added and started to walk towards the exit. 
Roy rested his weight against the back of his chair and put one of his arms around Claudia's shoulder. “Hey Hayes,” he yelled when Lisa was about to leave the officer's lounge, making not only her turn towards him, but everyone else as well. “So, in your place then? And don't worry I'll bring the “dessert”,” Roy said with an evil grin. Lisa looked at him with a cold and killer look that would have made anyone run away as fast as the wind scared to death, but Roy only smiled at her with his cocky playboy smile, making Lisa even more angry. She'd make him pay later, but now she was late for her shift. 
 
The day didn't get better for her. She had just finished her shift when word arrived, Mimei was being held prisoner by Khyron and she was in charge of planning the rescue operation. She requested Roy at first to be the lead pilot, but Rick’s adamant request that he be the one in charge of rescuing Minmei was too much for her, so she finally gave in. Instead of her original plan, Roy would be leading the decoy team while Rick would lead the rescue. She and Claudia would be on board the observation airplane to command the operation. 
“Are sure this is the way you want to do this?” Claudia asked again while they were climbing into the airplane. 
“What other choice do I have? He'll go to rescue her whether it’s his mission or not,” Lisa said sadly and couldn't stop turning her head back to look at him while he was climbing into his VT. She wanted to say something, to wish him luck, to tell him to be careful, but she remained silent as always. 
“Let's move, Hon, the sooner this begins the sooner it will end,” Claudia said putting a hand on her shoulder. 
 
The mission was going smoothly, everything according to plan and yet there was something bothering her. And it wasn't the fact that Rick would met with his beloved Miss Macross. 
“What's the status of the Skull team?” Lisa asked. 
“They're still engaged in combat but the enemy is starting to retreat” Claudia said. 
“And the Vermilion team?” 
“Rick just crossed the first defense line and is about to enter the hangar.”  
“Good,” Lisa said while she was checking the screens around them, that showed what was happening just beneath them. After all the time that had passed, she still felt her heart make a jump every time she saw her screen, knowing that one of those dots surrounded by enemies was Rick. 
“Relax Lisa, everything is going as planned,” said Claudia but the moment she finished the sentence the plane gave an unexpected turn. 
“We're under fire! Anti-aircraft missiles are being shot at us” Sounded the voice of the pilot over the comm. 
“How did they find us?” Lisa asked while she sat next to Claudia and took control of communications. 
“This is Pelican Mother, we're under fire. I request cover up fire,” Lisa said. 
“Pelican mother, this is Vermillion 1, we're in the middle of combat here. We can't help you, at the moment,” said Rick who had just entered the Hangar where Minmei was, but still was unable to see her. 
“Vermillion 1, this is Pelican Mother, according to the radar you are not facing too much resistance we just need one of your men,” Lisa said while the airplane made another turn trying to avoid the missiles and Claudia was trying to contact the base. 
“I'm sorry, I can't, I need all the men I have” Rick said and cut communications. 
“Is he out of his mind?” Claudia asked and Lisa just throw her headphones against her screen. 
“Pelican Mother, this is Skull one, we're on our way our ETA...” was Roy saying but the communications were cut. 
Lisa blink a couple of times before she could focus her sight. Alarms were sounding all over the plane, smoke started to fill the cabin and several screens were dead. 
“Lisa are you ok?” Claudia asked. 
“Yeah” Lisa said and clean some blood from her head, she had hit the screen in front of her with her head and cut her forehead. “You?” She asked while was trying to make her console to work but it was dead. 
“I'm fine,” Claudia assured her. 
Lisa unbuckled her safety belt and moved to the next console were another officer laid unconscious, she moved her away carefully and grabbed her headphones.  
“This Pelican Mother, we're hit. I repeat we're hit” Lisa said. 
“Pelican Mother, this is Skull one. How bad is it?” Roy asked, concern audible in his voice. 
Lisa looked at Claudia who was talking to the pilot and made sings to her to let her know how bad the situation was. 
“Right engine is out, we're searching for a place to land, but under this heavy fire it won't be easy.” She answered to Roy. 
“We'll be there in 10 minutes” 
“I don't think we have 10 minutes, Roy” Lisa said, while she clench to the screen as the plain made another evasive turn. 
“Dam it!” Roy said desperately. He changed channels “Rick, are you there?” He asked. 
“I'm busy right now, Roy” Rick said while he fought with a Zentraedi. 
“Can you send one of your men to cover Pelican mother?”  
“I already told Lisa I can't, we're facing heavy resistance here” 
“It's just only one man, they were hit!” Roy said harshly. 
“Our priority is to rescue Minmei, I haven't been able to that and we're still facing resistance. I'm sure they'll find a way to fix the situation” Rick said annoyed and cut the communications with Roy. 
Roy hit the instrument panel of his VT in anger. And then push the throttle at it's full capacity.  
“Pelican Mother, this is Skull one, I'm on my way just keep trying to stay away from those missiles” 
“We're trying Sk...” Lisa said and a loud noise replace her voice, a noise that he knew too well, an explosion. 
“We've been hit again..we're going down. I repeat we're going do...” Interference was the only thing that Roy could hear now.  
“Lisa! Lisa come in! Come in damn it!” Roy said changing channels in desperation. Please no, not Claudia... he kept repeating to himself while he push the throttle knowing that the VT could not go any faster. 
 
Claudia cough several times, the air was fill with smoke and fuel vapors. She moved, her entire body ache just by trying to, but she managed to sat. It was then that she looked around. Their plane had crashed and what it used to be the cabin was now a pile of metal that was starting to burn. A young Lt was laying next to her, dead. She could see four other bodies a couple of meters away but she didn't knew if they were alive or not, she only knew that non of them were Lisa. 
“Lisa?” She called, but she got no answer. “Lisa,” she called again. 
“Clau...”she could hear a small whisper near a piece of the wing. She moved over there. 
“Lisa is it you?” She asked again. 
“I'm trapped” Lisa said coughing. 
“I'll take you out there” Claudia said and pushed the wing a little bit, but enough for Lisa to move and crawl from under it. 
“You Ok?” Claudia asked. “Can you walk?” 
“I think so, yeah” Lisa said. 
“Good, then lets move the wing is fill with fuel” Claudia said and helped Lisa to stand up and they started to move. 
They had only given a few steps when suddenly a blast make them fly into the skies, the fuel on the wing had caught fire and exploded.  
Bells were ringing in her ears and her head was spinning, she didn't know what had happened. She only knew it was difficult to breath, something was pressing her chest. She opened the eyes and the first thing she saw was Claudia's bloodiest face. 
“Oh my god, Claudia,” Lisa said and softly moved Claudia's body that was protecting her. 
“Claudia” Lisa whispered scared, while she was moving her body, not knowing if she should let her rest onto her back because she could see the burns in Claudia's back. 
“Claudia please answer me!” Lisa demanded. 
“Hey hon” Claudia said in whisper barely opening her eyes. 
“Thank God” Lisa said relieved. 
“Are you OK?” Claudia asked. 
“Yeah I'm OK” Lisa said, looking at her, knowing that she was fine thanks to her friend. 
A loud noise caught their attention and both woman looked at the sky, in the middle of the smoke from the crash they saw a VT, Roy's VT. 
“Look who came to the rescue” Lisa said smiling to Claudia. 
“He always came to the rescue” Claudia said with a weak smile while she rested her head in Lisa's lap. “Take Care of him for me, would you?” Claudia said softly. 
“What?” Lisa said feeling her heart break. “You'll take care of him, don't you dare to talk like that!” 
“I may not...” 
“No!” Lisa interrupted her. “No! Don't you dare. You're a soldier you are trained to fight, so don't you dare to gave up” Lisa said trying to sound as commanding as she could but she couldn't hide the emotion in her voice, she was a soldier too and she knew how bad the situation was. 
“Lisa just promise me that ...”  
“I won't promise you a thing! I won't!” Lisa said and her chin started to tremble “You're Claudia Grant, you're the though one here, you .. I order you to fight!” 
 
Roy almost crash landed his VT and even before the canopy was totally open he jumped out off it. He didn't care. He just wanted to find her, his heart beating faster inside his chest, full of fear. And then in the middle of all the chaos and smoke he saw Lisa's white uniform. 
He started to run towards her, his heart shrinking with every step he gave. He arrived to their side and fall onto her knees, taking Claudia's body out of Lisa's hands and holding it his owns with care. 
“Claudia...darling,” was all he could say while he was trying to wipe some blood out of her face. 
“Hey flyboy” Claudia said with a sweet smile. 
“Hey baby” Roy said with a sad smile. 
“I love you” Claudia said raising her hand and softly caressing his cheek, leaving a trail of blood. 
“I love you too” Roy answered holding her hand in his face “I love you too” he repeated and tears started to fill his eyes. 
“Take Care of Lisa” Claudia whispered. “Take care of each other” 
“You'll take care of us” Lisa said grabbing one hand of Claudia, she just smiled at her. 
“Lisa is right baby, you'll take care of us” Roy said bringing her even closer to him. 
They didn't even hear the search and rescue team arrive to the crash, they only realized they were there when a paramedic tried to pull Roy away from Claudia and pushed him away. 
“Sir, let her go, we need to treat her,” said the paramedic when he was back on his feet. 
“Roy” Lisa said softly touching his hand, it was then that Roy reacted and let Claudia go. 
The paramedics started to treat her immediately, put an IV and moved her to a stretcher before starting to run towards the helicopter that was waiting for evacuate the crash site. Roy followed the stretcher and no one dare to told him to get out of the helicopter. He sat next to her, holding her hand and she smiled to him, her hazel eyes looking at him fill with love. 
Lisa just looked at them take off, unable to move. 
“Ma'am? Ma'am” another Paramedic said to her but she didn't answer “She's in shock, she's pretty bad wounded, she's cover in blood,” He said to another paramedic. 
“It's not my blood, it's Commander Grant's blood,” were Lisa's last word before faint. 
 
The bright light of midday made Lisa opened her eyes, the warm sensation in her face made her smile for a second, she hasn't feel the sun light in her face like this in a long time, it made her remember the sunny days of September in her parents state.  
“Lisa?” She felt a voice calling her name, and when she tried to move a wave of pain run through her entire body.  
“Lisa?” Admiral's Gloval asked again softly. 
“Sir?” Lisa said softly, sleepy. 
“How do you feel?”  
“Like a train run over me” She said trying to seat but failing. Gloval moved closer to her and helped her. 
“You just got out of surgery, you had some internal injuries. Some cuts and bruises too,” He explained. Lisa looked at him clueless for a moment. 
“Do you remember what happened?” Gloval asked concerned. 
Lisa remain silent for a few seconds, trying to order her memories, then added “Yes, yes I do. Our plane crashed.” Gloval just nod. 
“Claudia how is she?” Lisa asked suddenly with corncern, Gloval avoid her gaze 
“You better worry for you now Lisa, you just went out of a long surgery,” he said with a fatherly smile. 
“She didn't make it, did she?” Lisa asked, her heart shrinking with every second that Gloval remain in silence. 
“No, Lisa. We lost her” Gloval said with a soft voice that she had never heard in him, his eyes full of tears.  
She kept looking at him, unable to process what he had said. It wasn't that she hasn't understood what he had said, it was that she couldn't believe it. Then Gloval hold her hand, it was then that the words sunk in her heart.  
She blink several times and bit her lower lip, she wasn't ready to cry. So she fought the tears with the same determination that she faced every battle, she clenched her teeth and looked away from Gloval, into the empty blue sky that she could see from her hospital window. 
Gloval didn't say a word, he just sat there next her, watching her fight her emotions, holding her hand. It was all he could do.
