“Eddy, you have 2 bogeys comin’ your way at 366 400 knots. Visual contact in 60 seconds.” Up in the skies above the rainforest of Borneo, three Hornets were flying pretty low. “Roger that Jenny. I’m just itchin’ to get it on.” Azzedy, Jennifer and Azrul were on the same group while Rizal and Alphonsus were in a different one. “Should we go get em’?” Rizal and Alphonsus were closing in quite fast. Before Azzedy’s group could react, Rizal ordered him to engage. The fighters broke formation and attacked. Azzedy’s group managed to get a lock on Alphonsus while Rizal managed to get Jennifer and Azrul. Azzedy and Rizal went head to head. Rizal almost got a lock on him when Azzedy braked and banked forcing Rizal to overshot his position. It was Azzedy’s turn to chase him while the rest looks on. They dove towards the hard deck at high speed. Azzedy passed him without him noticing it until when they pulled up simultaneously, Rizal flew right into his targeting system. Rizal ordered them to return to base. “Not bad for an old man. Right Eddy? Where is that old hag?” Jennifer teased him. “I’m just four years older.” She was looking for him until she looked up and saw his cockpit right above hers. Azzedy replied in his cocky voice while inverting above her and gave her a peace signature with his fingers. “Greetings!” When it was all set and done, they reported to base that their training was clear. They were then ordered to return to base.
“Tower this is Gator group requesting permission to land.” Their permission was denied because the runaway wasn’t cleared yet. “That’s a negative. The Runaway is not clear.” Jennifer sensed something. “Eddy, no. Please, it’s not a good idea.” He laughed and passed the tower at 400 knots. He then executed several barrel rolls. “YEEEEHAHH!” Everyone heard his joy cry.
The fighters landed safely and celebrated their undefeated streak. “C’mon everyone, clean up and since this is my last flight, tonight I’m buying.” Everyone headed for the locker room but Rizal was stopped halfway by Sheila. “Captain, could you please tell me why you didn’t answer my calls anymore?” He smirked sarcastically before he answered. “I’ve been quite busy lately. You know, ever since I was promoted I couldn’t spend time like I did before.” Sheila looked down to the floor. “But you have time spend with your wing mate is that it? I know I’m just a Lieutenant.” Rizal lift her chin up to look into her eyes. “It’s not like that. It’s not like that at all. One day, you’ll understand. Now if you don’t mind, my crew’s waiting for me.” As he left for the locker room, Sheila walked away towards her quarters with tears running down her cheeks.
She was about to tell him that she’ll be transferred to an aircraft carrier and she’s afraid that she’ll never see him again. Moments later in a nearby coffee house, the guys were celebrating. “So Eddy, looks like you’ll be taking over the leadership of the Gator Group as of tomorrow. So please don’t do anything stupid because they’ll think I’m the one who taught you guys to do so.” As Rizal was sipping his drink, Azrul teased him. “You mean like when you were caught dating outside the officer’s hall?” Rizal spitted underneath the table when he heard that. Everyone laughed at him. It was a few hours of laughing and joking until it’s time to head back to their respective quarters. Inside their quarters, each of them found an envelope with their names on it on their desks. None of them were pleased by the letter’s contains.
The next morning, all of them met in the cafeteria for breakfast. “Any of you received any letters last night?” All of them nodded to Rizal’s question. “If according to the letter, we’ll be leaving first thing tomorrow morning.” Jennifer was pinning up her hair when Azzedy pulled the pin away which made her long hair fell back down. She pinched him so hard that he fell of his chair. “So anyone have any idea where they’ll get us stationed?” Alphonsus sighed deeply while his elbows are on the table supporting his chin. “Beats me. I suppose if we’re not in the same battalion, then this is goodbye then huh?” Azzedy was trying to look brave and stood up. “Don’t worry. We’ll see each other again. I promise.”
They all got up and hugged each other before leaving the cafeteria to do their reports for the commanding officer of the base and to pack up their things. Rizal was praying hard that they’ll meet again one day. It was two days later when he was already on board the SJS carrier under the command of Colonel Richard. They’re on their way out to the South China Sea. He was surprised to see Sheila on the bridge as the new radar officer.
“My, this is interesting. It’s good to see you again Lieutenant.” Sheila smiled. “Thank you sir. It’s good to see you too.” Along with her on the bridge were Lt. Yong and Lt. June. They were transferred from the St. Teresa carrier. Sheila then reported an incoming friendly helicopter was approaching. “This is Delta 6, we’re requesting permission to land and unload replacement pilots.” June cleared the request and the chopper landed on the flight deck. Rizal walked towards the flight deck to meet these new pilots. It was his job to greet and brief new personnel on this ship. As soon as he got there, it was as if he was dreaming. The pilots ran towards him and gave him a big hug. It was like his prayers were answered. Trying to control his emotions, he ordered an attention. The pilots obeyed the order but they’re still smiling. “Good morning boys and girl. Welcome to the TCS St. Joseph aircraft carrier CV-40. Colonel Richard is busy with something so he asked me to greet you personally. You may proceed to your quarters and settle down. Dismissed.” Before he walked away, he stopped with his back facing them. “I’m glad to see you guys. See you guys at lunch.”
Reality returned to his view when the deck lights were lit up because it was getting dark. While taking the breeze in his face, suddenly he felt a soft touch on the back of his neck. “What are you doing up here. It’s late and you might get a cold.” Rizal held her hands into his and smiled. “Thank you.” Was the only think he said smiling before giving her a kiss on her forehead. He then walked back towards his quarters while Sheila looks on shaking her head. She’s very worried looking at him like that.
