fanfic = The sun was getting ready to set. But the sky is still filled with lights and explosions of nuclear missiles. “Captain, we’ve lost both the Ghost and the Croc squadron as well sir. Shall we retreat the Shark squadron?” Sitting on his chair on the bridge, he then calmly replied. “No, let them stay.” An alien fighter has its sight on one of the F-18 Hornets. It fired a few bolts of lasers towards it but the Hornet pilot saw it coming and performed a climb with barrel rolls. “You did not just shoot that blue thing at me. That’s it!” The pilot lowered his speed and that took his wing mate’s attention. “What’s the matter? You’re slowing down!” A voice came from a worried wing mate. “I’m bringing it closer.” The confident pilot answered. “You’re gonna do what?!” The alien fighter was about to engage but the F-18 pilot hit the brakes and pulled up simultaneously. The alien fighter overshot its position and right into the Hornet’s targeting range. “Woops, you missed.” He fired a missile towards it and the target’s destroyed. The last remaining enemies retreated as they couldn’t match the last remaining of the earth’s finest young guns. “At least they’ll remember the Shark Squadron when they return.”

Still unknown to them, these aliens, also known as the Zentreadi, were attacking them because they thought the carrier was the SDF-1. Taking heavy attacks almost every single day, the St. Joseph Aircraft Carrier are losing a lot of pilots. Despite the best efforts put up by the last remaining of the elite F-18 Hornet’s the Shark Squadron, led by Lieutenant Azzedy. Being the only aircraft carrier that survived numerous zentreadi attacks, Colonel Richard had no other choice but to relay an S.O.S via satellite communications if there’s any one able to assist them. They’ve lost contact with the Europen, the Americans and the rest of the Asian Division. Only time will tell as they prepared themselves for the upcoming attacks

Far away up in deep space, SDF-1 had just reentered the solar system. Coincidentally the S.O.S transmission was caught by the battle fortress’ communication system.

“Captain, I’ve received some kind of a distress signal. It looked like it came from Earth.” Captain Gloval took a short sigh and ordered Vanessa to patch it through.

“This is Colonel Richard from Earth’s Forces Malaysian Division. We’ve been attacked by some alien forces. We’re losing a lot of soldiers here. We don’t know if we can hold them off before they could reach the mainland. These are the images captured during some of the attacks. If anyone received this message, please acknowledge me A.S.A.P.”

As soon as the images were decrypted, everyone on the bridge was shocked in disbelief for they’ve seen on the main screen. “Those are Zentreadi forces!” exclaimed Lisa. “Commander Hayes, get Commander Fokker and the Vermilion group to see me in the briefing room right away.” Ordered Captain Gloval. Lisa nodded affirmative and went announced on the P.A paging the pilots. At the same time, Max and Miriya were still playing with Little Dana in their quarters. “I wonder if our daughter will ever get to play on earth one day?” Asked Max. Miriya just smiled and answered “One day she will. Don’t worry about it.” As soon as she finished her sentences, they heard the announcement. The couple changed into their uniforms before sending Dana to Jean Grant in the infirmary office. They know they could rely on Jean every time they had to go on a mission. Sometimes they even asked Jean to look after Dana during her bedtime if the Sterlings had to do late night patrols.

Minutes later, the RDF pilots assembled in the briefing room before the captain arrived. “I wonder what this is about this time?” asked Rick who is still wondering why they’re being summoned by the captain as soon as they’ve reached the Solar System. “Maybe the captain overheard your conversation with Lisa on the tech com.” said Roy smirking. Rick had nothing to say but blushed by the fact that he did had a personal conversation with Lisa while on petrol because he needed to apologize to her for being late for their date. “Maybe it’s because Max was flirting with Miriya during their recon flight near Mars” said Roy teasing then laughed which was accompanied by Rick’s. “No we weren’t! We were just…. Mesmerized by the view and….and…. um…. Help me out here Mir!” exclaimed max trying to get Miriya’s assistant. Instead, Miriya played along with Roy’s teaser and answered “mesmerized by the view huh?!” she said raising an eyebrow. “I thought you said you were mesmerized by the way I looked at you on the tech channel. I’ll never to believe your charming words ever again Maximilian!” said Miriya pretending to look very upset.

“Woops, some body’s going to sleep on the couch tonight.” Teased Rick. “Well, at least I know Lisa’s gonna be on my side when I wake up tomorrow morning” he added. “Miriya, please, look at me. Sweetie?” pleaded max. Miriya still wanted to play but couldn’t hold her laugh any longer and laughed it out till she was in tears. “I’m sorry baby. But that’s the only way I can be sure that you’re sincere with your words.” She said while holding his hands against her cheeks. Max sighed in relief. As soon as their laugh died down, the captain entered the room along with Lisa. Rick winked at Lisa but she replied with a fake angry smirk. Rick understood that smirk as it means that this isn’t the time to flirt. Roy commanded the Squadron in attention till the captain gave them the order to be at ease and seated.

As the captain brief them with the situation which occurred on earth, the pilots listened to every details and even studied the pictures from earth carefully. “As you can see, the reason why you are being called here today is that I’ll be sending some of you down to earth to assist the St. Joseph aircraft carrier and establish their defense. Our objective is to lead them stop the Zentreadi from attacking them. If they insist on fighting, you have my concent to take them down with any means necessary. I’ll be sending the Sterlings down first to look up on things. As commander Fokker and Lieutenant Hunter will stay to guard the SDF-1. Once the area is secured only then we can bring the SDF-1 into earth’s atmosphere. Any questions?” as soon as the Captain stopped, Miriya raised her hand to ask the questions “Captain, is there any idea on how long me and Max will be down there by ourselves until we can confirm the area is safe for the SDF-1 to make it’s re entry into earth’s orbit?” “I know where you going with this Lieutenant. Not to worry about your daughter. I’ll assign Dr. Grant to watch only over her as soon as you leave for this mission. The least it’ll be around 2 to 3 days. I understand it’s difficult to be apart from your child in that period of time, but if you two can get this mission over with as soon as possible would be even better.”

The mixed feelings of relief and worries played in the mind of the Sterlings, especially Miriya’s. Then Max put his hand on her shoulder “Don’t worry Mir, they said that they’ll keep Dana safe while we’re away then they will.” said max smiling assuringly. “Yeah Mir, we’ll keep her safe 24/7. Just make sure you two get the job done quickly.” Said Roy looking as firm as he could. Miriya had to swallow it even if though it pains her to be part from their daughter.

“Don’t worry Lieutenant. You can communicate with her whenever time permits. My part is done. Commander Hayes, is there anything you’d like to say?” Lisa nodded and cleared her throat before she started to speak “This just to let you know that we’ll be sending several crates of food, medical and weapon supplies. These supplies should suffice for 5 to 6 outings. Should you run low on supplies, you are required to contact us A.S.A.P. Only then we’ll dispatch more supplies to your location. Should you need reinforcements, Commander Fokker and Lieutenant Hunter will be on standby. We’ll try our very best to enter earth as soon as you’ve completed securing the area near the St. Joseph’s carrier.” “Now if there are no further questions, you may dismiss. The sooner we act, the sooner it will end. Oh Lieutenant Sterlings’, good luck and hope to hear from you soon.” Said Gloval while lighting his pipe. “Thank you Captain.” the couple saluted the captain. As soon as the captain returned their salutes, they exited the room heading towards their quarters to pack up.

“Never thought that we’ll be leaving our daughter for quite a long time.” Said Miriya still looking worried but was interrupted by a warm gentle kiss by Max on her lips. “Don’t worry Mir. We’ll secure the area so quick that we won’t realize that it’s over.” Miriya pulled Max into her hug and said “thank you. I’m feeling much better now.” A few hours later, they’re all set to leave. Before they leave, they went to play with their daughter for the last time before leaving for their mission. It brought Miriya into tears. Lisa had to comfort her. Once she’s fine, she looked at her daughter for the last time before heading towards the hangar. “We’ll see her again will we Max?” asked Miriya while looking at the floor of the hangar deck. “Yes we will. I swear Mir. We will.” Said Max while hugging his wife. As soon as they reached the hangar, they did their usual pre flight checks like before each and every flight they’ve done in their lives.

As soon as everything is in order, Miriya climbed on her red VF-1J. Max was about to climb on his when Rick and Roy came from behind. “You’re just gonna leave without saying goodbye?” said Rick smiling. “It’s not like I’m permanently transferred or something. I’ll be back. Besides, if I’m gone, who’ll bother the two of you?” Roy slapped his shoulder and said “Take care down there. We’ll always be here when you need us.” Max smiled and climbed onto his machine and saluted the two pilots before closing the canopy. Once everything is set and done, Max moved his machine towards the take off runaway alongside Miriya’s Veritech. “Bridge, this is Vermillion 2 and 4 requesting permission to take off.” Asked Max in his professional voice. “Vermilion 2 and 4, good luck and be careful down there. Permission granted.” Answered Lisa through the tech channel. “Thanks Lisa. See you soon. Ready Mir?” asked Max looking at Miriya. “Ready when you are Maximillian.” Answered Miriya giving a thumbs up. Vermilion 2 and 4, Taking off.” Max and Miriya pushed the thrusters to the max leaving the runaway in just split seconds.

Hours later, they’ve reached earth’s atmosphere. Heading towards the position of the carrier. Moments later, they’re about to approach the carrier when an image appeared on their tech com. “This is captain Rizal of Earth Forces. Identify yourself or we’ll send our fighters to eliminate you. You have 10 seconds to comply.” Max was about to reply the message when he saw a few Zentreadi battle pods appeared. “Reply later Max, pods first!” Suggested Miriya to her mate. Max nodded affirmative and went after the pods. While these two RDF aces having fun in the skies, they were watched closely by the men and women of the aircraft carrier. “What do you make of those two fighters Captain?” “They seemed to be fighting on our side Colonel. But I’ve never seen those fighters in my entire life.” As soon as the young captain finished his last words, they were shocked to see the two fighters transformed into their battloid mode. “They’re aliens! They must be fighting over us! Captain, launch all fighters. Destroy the enemy before they could reach us!” Lt. Sheila ordered a scramble fighters through the P.A. Lieutenant Azzedy led his F-18 squadron towards the dogfight scene and fired at will. “Phonsus, you and Azrul will lead the squadron to take out the egg shaped ones. Jenny and I will take on the fighter robot thingy.” “Copy that boss.” Answered Alphonsus and broke formation as instructed. Max was confused because the people that they were supposed to assist are firing upon them as well. All they can do for now is to destroy the pods and evade they’re human allies attacks’. Miriya was about to lose her patients when Max told her to keep on evading until the pods are completely wiped out.

They stayed in they’re battloid mode throughout the battle until the remaining pods retreated. As soon as the pods are out of their scanners, Lieutenant Azzedy still hunting Max veritech while Jennifer persuits Miriya’s. While they were chasing one another, suddenly, Colonel Richard interfere all their communicators. “All fighters return to ship immediately. That includes the red and blue fighters. That’s an order.” “But sir!” the young pilot said in high tone. “But nothing Lieutenant. I want a cease fire and all of you to return to the ship right away.” “Yes sir.” That was the person who he couldn’t disobey at any cost. Just before they’ve landed, the veritechs switched back to fighter mode. As soon as they’re on the flight deck, Max saw lots of infantry soldiers waited for their arrival. Both max and Miriya raised their canopies and climbed down their fighters. Once they’re on the deck, everyone was surprised that they’re humans. Especially Lieutenant Azzedy. Moment’s later, Colonel Richard was on deck. Captain Rizal gave the attention order. Everyone stood at attention including Max and Miriya. The Colonel stood in front of them both and they saluted him. As soon as the Colonel returned the salute, he began his explanation

“So I see that you’re from the modern side of the world. I’m Colonel Richard. First, I’d like to welcome you aboard my fellow soldiers. Secondly, I’d like to apologise for the assault that we had launched on you earlier today. But later, while you were battling out there, I’ve received a transmission from Captain Gloval on board the SDF-1. He told me that the two of you were sent here to assist us correct?” Max then started his. “Sir, allow me to introduce myself. I’m 2nd Lieutenant Maximilian Sterling and this is my wing mate and wife, 2nd Lieutenant Miriya Sterling. It’s an honour sir, for being assigned to you on earth.” “If I may ask Lieutenant, what is this SDF-1 and what in the world are those things you just flew?” asked Captain Rizal standing next to the colonel. Max raised an eyebrow.

“Sorry, I’m Captain Rizal. I’m just curious about those things you just flew.” Max was about to explain them when the colonel interrupted. “If you don’t mind captain, our friends might be exhausted from their journey. So I’d suggest that the two of you pack up your things and my captain here would lead you to your quarters.” Max stepped up and asked something which was beyond Miriya’s expectations. “Sir, if you don’t mind, Miriya and myself will share one quarters. After all, it’s just for temporary.” The colonel smiled and nodded an affirmative. “Very well Lieutenant. As you like. Captain, I’m counting on you to take care of our guests. We’ll have a meeting tonight after dinner. I’ll be in my quarters till then.” Captain Rizal gave the attention order and saluted. After the captain ordered a carry on, the captain led the RDF pilots to their quarters.

Back on the flight deck, Lieutenant Azzedy went to accompany Jennifer who was still checking her fighter plane. “Hei, what’s with the gloominess? It’s not like you to wonder off with your thoughts like that. What are you thinking?” Azzedy sighed and answered, “Maybe I’m just tired. I’m just wondering, why in the world, they’d send us only two of those weird fighters if they really want to help us.” Before Azzedy could continue, Jennifer took his hands and put them on her cheeks. “Look, we’ll get the answers during tonight’s briefing. So cheer up. It’s not like it’s the end of the world.” Azzedy just smirked at her “You know, if you keep on doing this, I’m gonna have to marry you sooner.” Jennifer slapped his shoulder. Once she’s done with her check ups, they left for their respective quarters.

Hours later, they’re all in the mess hall having dinner. Azzedy and his shark squadron were sitting together while Max and Miriya on their own. They were joking and laughing with each other as if they’ve been living there for months. That really caught the attention of the shark squadron members. “Don’t you guys think it’s weird that they’re sitting on their own? C’mon, ask them to join us.” Alphonsus suggested. Azrul agreed to that as well and added “at least we’ll get to know them and we won’t have to take them as strangers the next time we go up in the air.”

Azzedy was about to get up and asked the Sterlings to join them when an announcement on the P.A was made for the shark squadron and the sterlings. They left the mess and headed for the briefing room. Once there, they all took their seats and waited for their next order. As the colonel entered the room, Captain Rizal was about to give the order but the colonel lift his hand and told them to be seated. “The reason why I called you people in here because as you all know, we have been sent by our friends two of their aces.” Azrul raised his hand and said “excuse me sir, correct me if I’m wrong, did you say two of their aces? Does that mean there are more of them up there?” Indeed you’re right Lieutenant. Now I’d like Lieutenant Miriya Sterling to introduce herself and the reason why they’re here. Lieutenant.” Miriya stood up and saluted the colonel before beginning her presentation in front of the briefing room. She began with introducing the enemy. The Zentreadi forces.

“The reason why they attacked you is that they thought we’ve arrived in earth after we made a space fold. So when they saw your vessel and saw most of their fighters were disabled by your fighters, they believed that you are one of us.” Then she continued to tell about herself. When she told them about herself, everyone was in shocked and disbelief until she mentioned about her wedding with max. The presentation went on which also includes the Veritechs they were flying. When she asked if anyone has a question, Jennifer stood up. “Why did they only send the two of you and not your whole squadron?” asked Jennifer with a very firm look on her face.

Before Miriya could answer that, Max stood up and answered the question. “We only followed the orders given by our captain. And that is to assist you guys to fight these zentreadis because we’re the only ones who knows how to deal with them and we have these veritechs to do it.” Max was then interrupted by Azzedy. “Are you saying that we’re not good enough to fight these aliens just because we’re still using old planes?” Max calmly answered that question. “That’s not what I meant. You guys have survived with your F-18’s all the way till now. That means you guys are incredible. Now, back to our briefing, the scanners showed that there are some Zentreadi outposts throughout our areas. Now there’s one about 60 miles radius from our current position. What we’re planning to do is that if we can capture this outpost, we can use it as a defense outpost and only then the SDF-1 can return to earth’s atmosphere and gives us full support. Miriya.” Max took his seat after asking Miriya to give out mission details. “Tomorrow we’ll begin with recon flights within the 60 miles radius. Max will lead your first squadron while I will lead the second squadron. Once we’ve located the outpost, we’ll return to base to fix up a battle plan. As usual, you must not be discovered at all cost. And if you do, do not fire until fired upon. Syncronize your watches to 2201hrs. We’ll be on flight deck on 0630hrs. That is all. Any questions?”

Alphonsus raised his hand. “How do I get out of this chicken outfit?” He laughed aloud along with the shark squadron until the Captain had to shout at them to settle down. The colonel only could shake his head and smiled looking at the young pilots still can enjoy themselves even in the middle of a war. Then Azzedy voiced out his opinion. “Sir, with all due respect, guys, no offence or anything.” “None taken.” Replied Max with a smile on his face. “We appreciate what you guys are trying to offer, but, we survived without your assistance in numerous battles. Colonel, I think Jennifer and I can lead the squadron in this mission while these two can sit on the flight deck on stand by.” The colonel sighed and folded his arms in front of his chest. “Lieutenant, it’s not wrong for them to assist you. Besides, they have their orders.” Azzedy just smirked to the answer that was given. “Sir, it’s not wrong either if they just take the standby post while we proceed with this mission. Besides, their orders were to assist us right? So, they’ll assist us when we need them.” The colonel knew the arrogant voice from the young pilot. He knew that he couldn’t stand it to see someone else is doing better than he is.

“Alright Lieutenant, then you’ll lead the first squadron and Jennifer will lead the 2nd squadron for the reconnaissance while the two veritech pilots will be on standby. Now, should there be any heavy hostility, they’ll launch on my command. Any questions?” Everyone agreed to the plan especially Azzedy. “Then as planned, Lieutenant, you’ll assemble the pilots on the flight deck by 0630hrs. There, you’ll brief the pilots on the mission details. That is all. Dismiss.”

As they all were dismissed from the briefing room, they left for their quarters while the colonel sits alone in the now empty room. Thinking that will they still have the chance to survive this war.

While the colonel contemplates on their chances of survival, things were slightly different up in the space fortress. Rick was out doing his patrol while Roy and Claudia took the time to drop by Jean’s quarters to play with little Dana. “Hei there little princess. How are you?” Asked Roy while picking up the little girl and put her sitting on his right shoulder. “Poor thing. I’d bet she missed her parents.” The little girl didn’t smile like she used to do every time her parents’ friends came by to see her. Claudia understands the look very well. After all, she is Miriya’s daughter. “She won’t take her usual afternoon nap because she kept on holding her parents’ photographs in her hands. She really misses them.” Explained Jean to them. Roy then passed the little girl to Claudia and said to the girl “Don’t worry young lady. They’ll be back soon. I promise.” The little girl smiled and gave Roy a big hug. “Thank you uncle Roy.” Said the little girl gratefully.

At the same time, Rick had just landed in the flight bay. He just got off his veritech when he saw Lisa came towards him with her very serious looks. Somehow he sensed trouble but to his knowledge, he’s been doing everything exactly as ordered by her without missing any details. As soon as Lisa stood in front of him, she looked up to him with her hands behind her back as if it was an inspection. Rick somehow had to start the conversation. “What did I didn’t do this time Commander?” Lisa raised an eyebrow. “Lieutenant Hunter, would you mind explaining to me what you just did briefly?” Rick is still confused about her actions and tried to stay as calm as he can to answer her. “No, I’ve no idea ma’am. What seems to be the problem?” Lisa frowned like a little girl and started to sound childish.

“Exactly that Lieutenant. Didn’t you notice that we’re alone here?” Rick was about to answer her but Lisa grabbed his cheeks and kissed him passionately. They both broke the kiss needed to take some air. Rick then smirked. “Well commander, what ever happened to protocols in uniforms?” Lisa smiled. “Why it’s not always that we get to do this you know. It’s been a few days since we went out together.” Rick then put his hands around her waist. “Are you forgetting something? Tonight it’s your turn to spend the night in my prison.” Lisa then started to joke with him. “Really? Was that necessary? I thought of spending the night at Claudia’s.” Rick looked upset and released his hands from her and started to walk towards his quarters when Lisa grabbed his right hand and laughed. Rick responded by pulling her into a hug and smiled. “I knew you very well commander Hayes. You like to make idle threats.” He was about to kiss her when Lisa put her finger on his lips stopping him half way. “Idle threats indeed. Alright, let’s go.” They were about to leave the hangar bay when Roy and Claudia passed by and yelled “GET A ROOM YOU TWO!” they laughed and disappeared into the corner.

“Don’t those two ever get tired of teasing us?” asked Lisa. Rick smiled and answered “Don’t worry, we’ll get them back. By the way, have you ever thought of how Max and Miriya are doing down there?” They laughed and continued towards Rick’s quarters.

Meanwhile, back on earth, Miriya couldn’t sleep. Her thoughts were with their daughter. Without her noticing it, she was being watched by her husband who is lying next to her. “I miss her too.” That expression took Miriya’s attention. “I thought you’re long asleep.” Max then pulled himself closer to his wife. “How am I supposed to sleep when somebody is wondering off in the middle of the night.” Miriya frowned and sighed. “I know. It’s just we’ve never been this far away from our little girl.” Max hid his head in her neck. Trying to get her to relax and sleep it off. “If everything goes well, then we’ll see her again soon.” Added Max in his sleepy voice with a yawn. “Thank you Maximilian. I don’t know what I’ll do without you.” Then she kissed her sleeping husband on his forehead. She then yawn and smiled. “Good night baby. Mommy will see you soon.” She whispered to her self before she fell asleep.
