Chapter One
“The beginning of a nightmare”
The light filters between
the closed curtains of the room, creating a penumbra
that makes the air even more heavy to breathe. Far
away a whispering voice could be heard.
"Today is a very confusing
day for the army and for all earth too, finally today
departing the earth will be the last generation ship that
takes human civilization to the most distant corners of the universe, but today
there is also another departure, one thats fill us with
sadness, and that overshadows these celebrations and leaves a deep emp...-
One hand turned off the
television and the silence completely filled the room,
the only thing that could be heard was the sound of the
clothes as he put on his white gloves and took his cap in his hands, with that
he completed his full uniform. He tried to comb his
hair, but what case it has, he will never make it, he only put his cap on a
took
a deep breath
Weeks earlier he woke up
in a jump, cold drops of sweat ran through all of his
body and a chill travelled all down his spine, he
couldn't remove his mind the images that have attacked him during sleep. He
stood up and went to the bathroom, washed his face
and put a towel behind his neck.
"Computer, phone addresses,
Aurora Sterling," he said as he walked through the
room nervously. He hadn't even finished speaking
the words when the computer answered him.
"You have an incoming call from Aurora Sterling."
"Put it on."
"Roy I had a very weird dream tonight."
"I also had a strange dream, a dream that.."
"That makes you chilled," said the soft voice of Aurora
"What did you dream?"
"A ship, a ship that
I haven't seen before and I'm not sure if the ship was
coming or leaving the earth."
"It was an important ship, I know that I've seen it before."
"Yes, and then I saw the silhouette of a woman, of a woman with very long hair."
"Her hair floated in
the air and I'm not sure if she was waving a hi or a
goodbye."
"And then the explosion,
I don't know if the ship exploded from a mechanical
failure or if it was an attack, but I think that it was an
attack."
"The explosion destroyed the ship completely."
"Yes and at the moment
that ship exploded I could feel that something changed,
the explosion of the ship unchained something
big."
"I felt like I was
there, near the ship, I could feel the warmth of the
explosion and I just couldn't run, I just stayed there frozen by fear,
I felt like I tried to scream but I couldn't say a single word."
"More than fear it was sadness."
"It’s something big Aurora, something that will change all of us."
"You think that the ship is the sdf-5?"
"No, I've seen the sdf-5 and it's not the ship, it's an older ship."
"You have any idea of what ship could it be? -
"I don't know. But
I do know that I've seen it before, I'll search in the army
files to see if I can find something."
"Sounds like a good idea."
"I don't know what else to do."
"I’ll think of
something, we have to figure out soon what our dream mean Roy,
because I'm afraid that it’s not just another dream."
"I'm afraid of that
too, why don't you talk with the others and ask if they had
the same dream."
"I'll do that, take care."
"You too, bye."
"Bye," said Roy
and sat on the bed, he couldn't take the angst that he felt in
his chest.

Lisa
Early in the morning I decided
to go to the surveillance operation center of the
united earth forces corp., I went to visit the general in
charge of the installations, the general Scott Bernard, who had become in some
way a kind of friend and protector of mine at the
same time. And if I was lucky enough I could see the lieutenient I want too
hardly to see and certainly make my day happy.
"Admiral on deck,"
said one of the members of my personal guard, when I entered
the room.
"Admiral," said Scott saluting me.
"General," I said
answering his salute and then I added, "how long has it been
Scott, how are you?"
"Fine admiral, and how about you admiral?"
"Fine too and you don't need to be formal with me Scot," I added with a smile.
"Ok," said Scott smiling too.
I turned to the 3 men that
were my personal guard, "You are dismissed and wait
for me in my transport," I said and the men saluted
me and left the room.
"Being a celebrity has it's inconveniences," said Scott smiling.
"More than you think,
I don't like the idea of having a personal guard, but
there's nothing I can do about it."
"You are too important to lose, Lisa," said Scott and I only smiled.
"What’s new?" I asked trying to change the subject.
"Not much, we are watching
every entrance and departure of the ships that come
into the system and also we are trying to find out
where are the resistance stations."
"As I can see, you
have a lot of new toys to play with," I said looking around
the room.
"Highest technology,
only comparable with the one that is on board of the
sdf-5," said Scott and I laughed in disbelief.
"Not that good Scott," I said and we both laughed.
"General we have an
anomaly in the fifth sector,"s said one of the technician
that was watching one of the screens.
"What’s happening Angie?" asked Scott.
"We capture waves of
transposition that will take place in that sector," said
the technician.
"That sector is forbidden
for transposition, it's above the center of command,"
I said.
"Do we have an identification of the ship?" asked Scott.
"No sir, it's not just one ship it's an entire convoy."
"Have the squadrons
of the sector on alert and send squadron 18 to watch the
area."
"Do you think it's the resistance?" I asked.
"They are never so brave, but it could be," said Scott.
"Sir the convoy just
went out of the transposition and all their weapons are
pointing to the recon squadron," said the same
technician.
"Prepare squadrons
19 and 20 for take off and that armor stations are ready to
shoot," said Scott.
"Give me a secure line
to center of command with Admiral Hunter," I said to one
of the technicians that were by my side.
"Yes ma'am," answered the technician.
"Sir we have a correct identification for the ship," said the first technician.
"Who the hell is it?" asked Scott.
"It’s one of the ships from the Jupiter division."
"Admiral Hayes, Admiral
Hunter is on line one ma'am," said one of the
technicians passing me one headphone.
"What?" was the
only thing that I could say to the officer that was giving me
the headphones, I felt as if all the blood in my body
froze.
"Are you sure Angie,
the Jupiter division got lost in space years ago?" said
Scott.
"The ship's telemetry is the same that we have in our files, sir," said Angie.
"General we have an
incoming call from the main ship, it says that it's Captain
Griffin."
"Admiral, Admiral Hunter is waiting," said the technician that was by my side.
"Thanks," I said trying to snap out of my surprise and took the headphones.
"What’s going on?" asked Rick on the other side of the line.
"Put the command center
on red alert, an unknown convoy came out of hyperspace,"
I said as serious and calm as I could.
"We already are on alert Lisa, are you ok, you sound worried?" asked Rick.
"I'm fine, one ship
has been identified as one from the Jupiter division, listen
I got to go, I'll keep you informed," I said and hung up,
that way I could focus all my attention on what was going on in the room.
"Captain Griffin,"
I said interrupting Scott who was already talking with the
man.
"This is Admiral Hayes, what's your status Captain?"
"Admiral it's so good
to hear you, I don't know exactly what happened, but we
have some troubles with the transportation ma'am."
"I can see that Captain,
I order you to unarm your men and prepare to be boarded
by the 18th recon squadron, for the moment you'll
be under General Bernard's custody," I said.
"Roger that Ma'am," said Griffin and the communication closed.
"The arsenal of the
convoy is completely unarmed and the doors are starting to
open to be boarded, Sir," said Angie.
"You really think it's them Lisa?" asked Scott.
"Years ago I would
have told you yes, but now everything is possible, but still,
that doesn't mean we don't need to keep them under
surveillance."
"Of course not, I'll
keep the squadron ready for attack and obviously I'll keep
you informed."
"Good, now I have to
go," I said as I saw that my personal guard was waiting for
me at the door of the room and besides, my cell
phone hadn't stopped ringing.
"I hope that the next visit won't be so problematic."
"I hope that too, take care Scott and keep me well informed."
"Sure, you take care too and give Rick my salutations."
"Bye," I said
and then I answered my phone as one of the men from my guard gave
me a few documents.
A few hours had passed since
I had visited Scott and now I had in my hands the
list of survivors of the Jupiter division, a list that lays
on my desk and I haven't decided to read yet. Finally I made the decision and
started to read, my blood froze when my eyes
stopped on the long list of survivors of 36 squadron, Lieutenient Susan Graham.
This name spun over and over again in my head, the
fear, the anger, the insecurity, everything mixed in my head. But I had to be
cautious, I wouldn't let anybody and especially Rick,
see my fears, that was why I had decided quickly that Rick and not I, was the
one in charge of giving the crew the welcome back to
earth the next day. But definitely, I would go to the award ceremony and
congratulate them myself and with the biggest smile this
woman, that had seen so many bad times in life, could wear. I was absorbed by
the thought when I felt that the door of my office
opened, I looked immediately to the door and all my worries disappeared
immediately and were replaced by a smile.
"Here's the lieutenient
that I wanted to visit this morning," I said as I stood
up.
"Sorry I was not there
Admiral, but everything turned into chaos after the
unknown ship appeared," said the lieutenient trying to
comb his unruly hair.
"Come here Roy and give one big hug to your mother."
"Mom," said Roy smiling and giving me a hug.
"How are you son?"
"Fine, today finally I could almost do a real recon flight."
"That's a taste of
danger for you," I said taking my son's hands and sitting
next to him.
"That's why we are
pilots and don't forget that you were the one who helped me
in all this."
"I know, I know,"
I said raising my hands, "but you look worried son, What's
going on?"
"Nothing, it's just that last night I had a very strange dream, mom."
"A dream?" I asked.
"I dreamt about a ship,
I don't know if the ship was coming in or leaving the
earth."
"And you think it has something to do with the convoy that recently appeaedr?"
"I don't know, with Aurora, we're trying to find out what it means."
"You think it's something bad?"
"I don't know, in my
opinion it's something big and not good, but we're not sure
of anything yet."
"Well if you find out something don't hesitate to let me know."
"Sure and speaking of worried faces, what about you, you also look worried."
"Me?" I asked, trying to look naive.
"Yes mom."
"It's just this ship
thing and this new nomination that the interstellar council
wants to give me."
"Mom don't lie to me, you know that that's not it."
"Don't you dare to
use these mental tricks of yours on me Roy II Hunter Hayes,
it's not good for you," I said trying to look angry and
pu my hands on my waist.
"Then don't make me."
"I'm worried about someone that came on the convoy that showed up today."
"Why?"
"No important reason, just something of mine," I said avoiding him.
"Well mom I have to
go, I just came because Scott, I mean General Bernard sent
me to deliver some classified documents to the
command center," said Roy when he noticed that I wouldn't tell him anything
more
about it.
"It's ok son,"
I said walking next to him. "I hope that you go to lunch at the
house on the weekend."
"I hope so too, but you know how it is being in the army."
"Sure I know," I said with a smile and hugged my son and we said goodbye.

I was walking in my office
like a hunted dog with the survivors report of the
Jupiter mission in my hands "Sue is alive" I thought and
wondered what would I feel if a saw her again, for a little while that what
had
happened in the conference room with her a long time
ago on Tirol had been coming to my head over and over again and I couldn't stop
thinking that she will be just like I remembered her.
Sue, doesn’t matter how hard I try to deny it, I do feel something for
her, and
how not to feel it? if she has insinuated and showed
me on more than one occasion that she was crazy for me. And I had let myself
be
conquered by the young girl, how could I resist? if
she was so gorgeous, so sexy. Will she still have some feelings for me? I asked
and kept thinking until an officer stand in front of
me and saluted me.
"At ease lieutenant," I said.
"Permission to speak
freely Sir," said the young officer with handsome blue eyes
and brown hair.
"You have permission
lieutenant," I said with a smile. "What's bring you here
son?"
"I came to say hi to mom and then came to see you."
"Well it's good to know that I'm second on your list," I said smiling.
"You look worried dad?" said Roy.
"Me worried?" I answered, avoiding Roy’s gaze. "It's just the work."
"I knew that you'll
be the one who gives the welcome to the survivors," said Roy
with suspiciousness.
"That's right, your mother can’t go so I'm the obvious option."
"I guess, mom is very
busy with the blue prints and other stuff for the sdf-5, I
think that they are going to make some modifications."
"I imagine. It's her new project and she's fascinated with it."
"How do you think it will be named?"
"I don't know son."
"Mom told me that she
was worried about somebody that was on board one of the
ships that showed up today."
"Your mother?" I asked, faking surprise, but immediately I thought about Sue.
"That's right."
"It must be Griffin the captain."
"Probably," said Roy.
"Son I would like to
not have to leave you, but I have a meeting with some of
the members of the council."
"It's ok dad, I also
have to leave," said Roy and we hugged each other and then
he left the room.

Roy
As I walked to the transport
that took me back to the surveillance operation
center of the united earth forces corp., where I was
assigned to the second in command of the vermilion squadron, I couldn't stop
thinking of the strange meeting with my mother and
father. For a start my mother was very worried, even fearful if I had to name
it in some way, but as much as I wanted to get into her
mind, she had always been the only person whom I didn't dare to play "mental
tricks", as she named them. Not from fear of being
discovered, it was out of respect. She always had respected all my decision
and
I owed her at least respect for her privacy. I still had
some of the mental abilities that I had developed with Aurora and the others
when we were kids, I had kept that a secret and hid it
carefully from everybody, well almost everybody. If there’s somebody in
this
world that I can't fool, that’s my mother. Mom has
always known that I keep my mental powers but she never asks me for it, on the
contrary she waits patiently until I was the one who
tells her and when I do she keeps the secret carefully. And it's not that I
love
my mom more than my father, it's just that for some
reason I felt attached to her in a special way, I've always felt protected and
relaxed with her, I knew that she will always be there for
me and that she’ll always support me. Even when everybody believes the
contrary,
because it was with dad who I always had been
seen flying his modify Fokker or talking about planes and flying. Then as if
the
meeting with my mother hasn't left me enough
doubts, I had the idea of going to see my father and he seems as absorbed in
thought and doubt as my mother. When I asked him
what happened to him I notice immediately that he was hiding something and this
time the curiosity was stronger and I got in and
out of my father's mind quickly, afterwards asking him why my mother was
worried, a name came immediately to my father's mind
and that was the name that was spinning in my head now. Who was this Sue Grahan
and why was my mother worried about her? I
thought as I got into the transport.

Lisa
I arrived home early and
was making dinner and waiting for Rick, who arrived
when dinner was ready.
"Hi Lisa," said Rick when he came in the kitchen.
"Hi Rick, why don't
you take a seat. Dinner is ready." I arrived at the table
with 2 plates served and we started to eat, talking
about what had happened during the day and about the meetings with the council.
After dinner we went to the kitchen and Rick
start to wash the dishes. "What's going on, why that face?", said
Rick when he
ffinished off washing the dishes and we started to
dry them.
"Nothing, nothing is wrong me," I said quickly.
"Come on I know that face, what's going on?"
"I'm just tired from work, that's all."
"That's not the look of being tired."
"Ok," I said leaving
the dishes on the table, "I'm worried about the idea of the
council making me the supreme commander of the
army."
"You are the right
one for the job and besides, they know that you are the
best," said Rick holding me.
"Maybe, but I'm not the age for that."
"Oh come on you're not that old," said Rick giving me a kiss in my forehead.
"That old?"
"You were the one that
said that it wasn't too old for the job and besides if
you don't take the job they might think to give it to me."
"Hey that wouldn't be such a bad idea."
"Oh no, don't even
think about it, listen Lisa I'm very happy with the charge
that I have, being the admiral in charge of all the military
operations is the job for me, that's what I am and I wouldn't ask for anything
else in this world."
"Well I think I remember
hearing decades ago, one captain said that for nothing
in this world he would be the admiral in charge of the
military operations, that he hated that job, that he would only be a pilot,"
I
said with a sarcastic smile.
"You're evil when you want to be, you know."
"Yes," I said
seriously and after a moment I gave him a quick kiss on the mouth.
We finished clearing up the kitchen and we went to
our room, we were falling sleep when I couldn't hold it any more and said, "Are
you going to go to the welcome ceremony?"
"I have to, since you're not going."
"Graham is among the
survivors," I said almost in a whisper, fearing Rick's
answer, every time that he spoke about this woman I felt
my heart squeeze.
"I know."
"Probably, she wants to go back to working with you."
"That's why you are worried?"
"No," I said trying to sound convincing but my tone of voice failed me.
"Lisa," said Rick
bringing me closer to him, "Graham is just a girl and you are
my wife, is that clear?" said Rick and kissed me first
on my forehead and then tenderly on the mouth. I only nodded and held him
tighter, as if holding him like this could erase all the
fears that this woman brought back to my memory, all the hell that I had to
live
on Tirol. As if holding Rick I could make him mine.
++++++++++++++
Rick
I arrived home late. I was
afraid of Lisa's reaction when she saw the list of
survivors the name of Sue. Immediately came to my mind
the memories of Lisa waiting for me, awake with Roy in her arms after every
meeting with Graham. I remembered the desperation,
that never was put into words but was reflected in Lisa's eyes every time that
I
had to leave on a far away mission with Graham.
Certainly I feared that Lisa was turning again into an ogre, just like she has
done on Tirol and that one way or another has made me
wish to spend more time in the sweet company of Sue, enjoying her soft smile
and
her attention, rather than arriving home and being
interrogated by Lisa, with her sarcastic and suspicious questions, just like
she
had done when I was still in love with Minmei But
finally I arrived home and found Lisa, trying to look calm and avoiding the
conversation about the survivors of the Jupiter mission
at all costs. When we were drying the dishes I noticed when I looked at her
out
of the corner of my eyes, that her face looked more
than angry or mad, it reflected worry and a certain sadness. I know her so well,
I know that every time that she lowers down her
head and wrinkles her nose it's because she doesn’t want to give the answer
to
the question and she gave an answer similar or
changes the subject suspiciously. I know that the image of Graham is around
in
her head, but only when she wanted to talk about it
would she bring the subject to light. She spoke about the new nomination that
the council had made her, but she and I know that
there's nobody better for the job and I think it was funny that she thought
she
is too old for the job, when she is as beautiful as
always and with the same vitality. In fact I think that this chignon that she
started to make since she was the representative of the
united earth forces makes her look more distinguish, more elegant, even when
I
miss sinking my nose in her hair every time that I
gave her a quick kiss on her neck We went to bed early, because the next day
would be a long day and as I was trying, with no
luck, to get sleep I couldn’t stop thinking that tomorrow I finally could
see
Sue after all this time. I asked to myself how much time
has passed since they left, would I still be in Sue's memory, would she still
be
so gorgeous. All these questions were interrupted by
a question that Lisa asked about if I would go to the survivors reception.
Finally she decided to touch on the subject, I think almost
angry, waiting for the storm. I answered that I'll go because she wouldn't go
and waited for her answer, that probably would be an
irony, but I was surprised to hear her said almost in a whisper that Graham
will
be there, like if she was afraid of saying Sue's name.
I tried to sound the most indifferent that I could when I answered her that
I
knew that she will be there, the image of that woman
makes my heart beat hard and I was afraid that Lisa, who was holding me, noticed
how fast my heart beat. Then she asked me
anything else about Graham, but I didn't pay attention to her words, but to
the
sound of her voice when she said those words, it was
a soft, and almost a broken voice, a voice that I just heard her a few times
from her. Ingenuously I ask if it was because of Graham
that she was worried, knowing from before that she wouldn't answer me and as
she
denied what was obvious I noticed that she was
trying to get away from me so I couldn't see her insecurity. I held her
immediately and brought her closer to me, and I said with the
most convincing voice that I could, that she has nothing to worry about, that
I'll never lay my eyes on Sue and as I said this I couldn't
get Sue out of my mind, I saw her face, her hair floating in the air, so long
that it seemed to float. But on the other hand I felt fear, I
was afraid of the fear that Lisa felt and that scared me. I tried to calm her
down and kiss her on the forehead and then softly and
tenderly on the mouth. Finally Lisa held me tight and I held her with strength,
as if holding Lisa this way, I could push the thoughts of
Sue away, the moments that we shared on Tirol, the moments when I was about
to
fall into her charms and finally I found myself
holding Lisa, but counting the minutes until I could see Sue again.
To be continued……………..
